Breaking The Myth: Can Diabetics Eat Honey?

Posted On July 14, 2020

Can diabetics eat honey? Yes and no, but hear us out..

Right off the bat, we can say that generally there is no significant advantage of substituting honey for sugar for diabetics. Since both contain glucose1 , they will affect your blood sugar level similarly. However, opting for natural honey rather than white sugar can be better in a long term, and here’s the reasons why:

1. Consuming honey may contributes to a smaller daily amount of calories and carbohydrates

Honey is surprisingly sweeter2 than granulated sugar, but that’s not a bad thing. When consuming honey, you will be likely to use a lesser amount to achieve a similar sweetness you would get from granulated sugar. As a result, the number of calories and carbohydrates you’ll be taking will be smaller.

2. Honey, if 100% pure, contains natural nutrients with no additional sugar or artificial additives

Honey is famous for its plentiful vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They help prevent and slow cell damage3 while fueling up the body with essential nutrients to build up immunity.

While there are so many types of honey in the market, raw natural honey makes the best option as it is extracted straight from a beehive/honeycomb and trained to remove impurities. This unfiltered honey does not carry any additional sugar or artificial additives. It preserves the natural nutrients in the honey.

Processed honey, on the other hand, undergoes a filtration4 process and affect the purity of honey. It may also be pasteurized (exposed to high heat) to destroy yeast to create a longer shelf life. While processed honey is a lot smoother, the filtration and pasteurizing process do remove some of its nutrients and antioxidants.

3. Honey don’t spike blood sugar level like normal sugar

How does honey affect blood sugar? Well, because honey is a natural sugar and a carbohydrate, it’s only natural for it to affect your blood sugar in some way. The good news is, when compared to table sugar, it appears that honey has a smaller effect.

Researchers believe that honey, unlike table sugar, may cause an increase in glucose-level hormone5, which is an important hormone for controlling blood sugar. A group of diabetics was given honey and it caused an initial increase in blood sugar 30 minutes after consumption. However, the participant’s blood sugar levels later decreased and remained at lower levels6 for two hours.

However, finding pure honey is the real challenge for most consumers.

A constant dilemma we have when it comes to finding real honey in the market is that often we are tricked into buying “pure” honey that is in reality packed with invisible sugar.

Even though labeled as “pure”, many are now afraid and hesitant to buy honey off the rack because they question its purity and validity. Instead of wishing for a healthier body, a wrong pick can lead to unwanted illnesses especially for those who have diabetes.
